Our guesses for the first round of the Telstra 2020 NRL Premiership competition did not produce our desired outcome, which is to correctly tip, for entertainment purposes only, the winners of each game of the fixture.
We ignore all markets other than the head-to-head. We stake an imaginary $100 per game.
For the first round, we had selected Parramatta, Canberra, Brisbane, Newcastle, Souths, Sydney, Manly and St. George.
We got the first five right. Our dividends amounted to $784. Using an average bookmaker margin of five percent, we’ll round the deduction for margin to $40, leaving a net of $744.
Subtracting $300 for the fixtures we missed, our account is up by $444 after accounting for bookmaker margin.
Here are our guesses for Round 2 of the NRL Premiership, although we have to admit that in light of the virus hysteria that might find the NRL suspending play, we are also guessing if the round will actually be played.
What we do know is that the online bookies have the markets open.
Canterbury hosts North Queensland at ANZ Stadium. The Cowboys are favoured by 2.5 and a win will bring us $1.73, so no reason to chase an upset for the $2.10 for Canterbury.
Penrith Panthers to win against St. George for a potential $162.
Brisbane are hosting Souths at Suncorp. The Broncos are mild favourites, but we will back Souths for $200.
New Zealand Warriors are supposed to host Canberra Raiders in Auckland. If the game goes off, we will have our imaginary stake on Canberra for a potential $1.33.
Doubting that Sydney will lose two in a row, we back the Chooks over Manly Sea Eagles for $150. Manly might be wondering who they ticked off in order to open the season with Melbourne and get Sydney the very next week.
Melbourne are clear favourites against Cronulla and we see no reason to turn down $155.
Newcastle tops the ladder after the first round, so we will take them over Wests for $185.
Parramatta are touring Gold Coast to play the Titans. We take the Eels for a possible $145.
