It is getting closer to the first bounce of the 2018 Toyota AFL Premiership competition and some early betting markets are open.
We decided to do something a little different this year, which will be to look at the futures markets on a weekly basis and see how play affects the quotes of the sides with regard to premiership odds.
We have arbitrarily selected Ladbrokes as our betting agency.
As of early 2018, Ladbrokes has established the Adelaide Crows as the favourites to win the flag. Hopefully, the Crows can continue their home-and-away dominance and get the job done in 2018, as they have come close the past two years and come away empty-handed. They currently carry a $5 quote.
Last year’s winners, the Richmond Tigers, are not receiving much respect for the moment, sitting in fifth at $8.50.
Between the Crows and the Tigers are the Sydney Swans ($6), the GWS Giants ($6.50), and the Geelong Cats ($7.50).
Port Adelaide Power is right behind Richmond at $9 and is the last side carrying a single-digit quote.
The top eight is completed by the Essendon Bombers at $13 and the Melbourne Demons at $15.
Last year’s wooden spoon recipients, the Brisbane Lions, have climbed up to hold the 16th position, tied at $126 with the North Melbourne Kangaroos.
It may be a case of Brisbane making some improvements during the trade period and the draft, but it could be a case of complete disarray that finds the Gold Coast Suns at the bottom with long odds of $201 staring them in the face.
Quotes may shift around a bit due to training injuries and the results of the JBL Community series, but we will ignore those contingencies and examine the quotes again following the first round, as it can be expected that players will get hurt and the pre-season will reveal little as it is mostly an exercise in determining final 22s for the start of the home-and-away season.
