It almost makes one wonder why the NFL bothers with the regular season, as the Conference Championship games this weekend both feature the one and two seeds from the American and National Conferences.
Four teams remain in the chase for a Super Bowl berth and the chance to hoist the Vince Lombardi trophy.
Punters could make selections by being blindfolded at tossing a dart. Both games feature a 3.5-point spread, with win betting and over/unders nearly identical.
The first game to bounce will be the Los Angeles Rams at the New Orleans Saints. The Rams, as the touring team, are 3.5-point underdogs, $2.50 for the win and on over/under of 56.5 points. The win bet on the Saints is $1.53 and $2.50 the Rams.
Playing a Conference final in the Superdome at New Orleans, to gain some idea of the home ground advantage, will be for the visiting Rams the equivalent of the Adelaide Crows facing the Richmond Tigers at MCG in the 2017 AFL Grand Final.
Next up, the New England Patriots will be in Kansas City to face the Chiefs. New England are 3.5-point underdogs, but Bill Belichick, Tom Brady et al relish that role. The win on the Chiefs is offering $1.57, the Patriots $2.40. The over/under is 57.
Both games offer many additional markets, so if the three we mentioned look scary, just look further.
Kansas City has not played a Conference championship game in 25 years. New England has won 10 straight Divisional titles and five league championships since 2001. Make of that what you will.
As for the 3.5-point spread on both games, well, the bookies are no dummies and have placed the spread where they cannot be beaten by a three-point field goal; it will take at least a touchdown and both of these games look like they will come down to the final possession.
